Know Your Rights: California Placement Legislation
Assembly Bill (AB) 705 is California legislation that aims to increase student completion rates and close achievement gaps by requiring community colleges to consider high school coursework and GPA (multiple measures) as primary factors for student placement. It ensures that students are enrolled in transfer-level courses by default and provides tools for their success. AB 1705, signed into law in 2022, requires California Community Colleges to maximize the probability that students will enter and complete transfer-level coursework in English and mathematics within one year. AB 1705 builds on AB 705 by addressing inequitable implementation and supporting strong and equitable placement and completion outcomes.
Quick Facts
- AB 705 changed placement in California, doing away with traditional placement tests, instead using your previous high school experience- grades, GPA, and math/English coursework to determine your placement.
- Transfer-level math & English courses- right from the beginning! AB 705 and 1705 means you are no longer placed into pre-transfer or remedial courses; now you can start directly in transfer-level courses, with or without support- the classes that count towards your degree or transfer goals.
- With AB 1705, your math placement is tied to your declared major and determined by the multiple measures information you've provided to MiraCosta. For more information on AB 1705 math placement, visit our page on Math Placement and Course Information.
